HDTV, BD Player, Home Theater System?

If I connect my bd player to my hdtv by hdmi, and the hdtv is connected to my home theater system via optical audio output, does that mean the audio from bd player is also transmitted to the home theater system? Or do I have to connect the bd player to the home theater system as well in order for me to hear anything while watching a movie from the bd player?
