How do you prevent fresh roses from prematurely wilting after cutting the stem before putting in the water?

Surprisingly, a little bit of bleach in the water seems to keep roses fresh longer. It keeps the water from getting all gross from the plants so they last longer. But cut the stems under water first, and remove all the leaves that will be below the water line. Leaves in the water only rot and kill your flowers sooner.
